    On the Go printing

Often on forums I see the same question....

"What do you need to print on site/at events"

Well I shoot a lot of events through the year and will be away a lot this year from Devon where I live, to Wales and further.

I need a setup that is portable, reliable and can easily be taken from the car to a hotel room.

I need to be able to print 5x7 to A3+, DVDs and DVD covers, so I carry a large battery from my Grand Scenic 1.9d when I changed it for a new one.

    All through a 600w inverter.

I have never been able to drain the battery after a full day, however as you can see front right I have a smaller battery available for phone and camera battery charging.

    Hope this helps someone

A few of these models were battery operated, granted some were a few years old but reviewers mentioned battery life. Wouldn't you have access to an outlet at these events?

Battery op printers are a waste of time, for two main reasons.

    1. You have to use the one and only battery made for that printer at OTT prices
    2. They do not last long, and what printers print DVDs with a battery

If you want to travel to and from shows, here, in the UK, rarely are sockets available, my office is in the rear of the car where I can sit in comfort.

I re charge the battery in the hotel room at night if needed, if I ever need to I could add a charging circuit to the car for £45

Often between sports events, dinner breaks etc I am able to print A3 AND A4 at the same time, build a DVD of shots and have the whole lot complete by start of the next events, which is why I am in demand at shows.

Travel printers with batteries are ok for the odd childrens party.

I'm impressed that your printer takes the abuse of rattling around in the back of the car over all kinds of conditions. How do you protect it?

What you say makes a lot of sense; people do want "instant gratification" and being able to produce products to sell on the spot is a great way to service the impulse buyers. I've used inverters in a car / truck for keeping my gear charged (we've been to a number of places where we have not had access to electicity for a number of days in a row and used it to keep the gear going).

Thanks for the post - most interesting.

I like your setup! I am going to go out on a limb here with a suggestion of a small gasoline powered inverter they are revered to be much quieter and use far less gasoline than a regular generator and they come in some pretty small sizes. Forgive me if this is out of place as I really don't know anything about your situation. However I was looking into them because of power outages during hurricanes here. Impressive little inventions. Here is a link to some of them:

Thanks, but it is aimed more at Corporate than individuals, when I shoot a days races the "owners" can have a DVD and prints before the day is over, it is just there, no need for protection, also, when I doo shoot for pleasure I can print and display instantly and as you say people then impulse buy

The inverter runs directly from the 12v supply no need for a generator, and it has never run out even all day on laptop and printer. Just take the battery indoors at night and re charge

Now that is nice. If you don't mind what brand of printer is that you have? I like Manfred, would like to know who has made one to function well out of the back of a vehicle, and how to protect it during travel as well. I suppose I'm still in the stone age as most printers I have had the instructions said treat them with kid gloves, not to move them around much and the likes. By the way looked at your sites and wow awesome work!

I only use canon because the newer and new Epsons now have a sub routine built in that stop the use of third party inks, the A3+ is an ix4000 and I will dread the day it stops the quality is superb, the DVD and A4 printer is the MG5350

I use my printers all day for work so believe me I know what to look for, do NOT be tempted to get 30! ink printers, my 4/5 ink printers print photo quality and I NEVER EVER use Canon ink, I use third party from Amazon, my paper is photo paper direct paper,

    re: On the Go printing

For more than 15 years, I had a Canon BJC-85 (after having dropped its predecessor a BJC-80 off the back of a truck). In the days before nice carrying cases were invented, I got a big (dark-colored, I think it was navy blue) bath towel and, after removing the ink cartridges and stowing them in their cases, wrapped printer in the bath towel and stuck it in a backpack. I've just ordered the current model of a Canon because I need to use a USB port as my printer port and the BJC-85 required an actual printer port and a very fat cable and, additionally, the prices of the inks are getting to be on the excessive side (they used to be on the order of $25USD for two cartridges and now that's the price for one. These printers are rarely found in stores, even in ones that are Canon authorized dealers. I didn't want a fax or a scanner and this new model doesn't have those, it's literally "Just A Printer" and it's orderable from Canon themselves. I was at a conference in October where this kind of printer was what they used on-site badges and, when I saw it, I asked them where they got it which is when I found out that Canon would sell direct to customers. If you have an old Canon printer, Canon will give 10% off the new printer.

And, for official copies to enter in photo contests as well as to print articles, letters, etc., I have a Xerox 8560 color laser printer and love it for those purposes.

    I'm jes' sayin'....
