Pileated Woodpecker gender identification
We had a pair in our local history park last year. It gave me the opportunity to get similar poses with both the male and the female.
Male
Notice the red mustache which is missing on the female.
Female
His red crest also extends farther forward, right to the eyes.

I like both of them...and thanks for the ID...now I will be able to identify that critter sometimes knocking on the side of our house...and our neighbour's Japanese tree.

Love them both, reminds me so much of what the cartoon character Woody the Woodpecker was modeled after.

There was definitely a better sun angle on #2 but, with nature you take the light you get.
I do have a better beamer which works OK at distances but these were a bit closer than usual and I didn't want to use it.

Re: Pileated Woodpecker gender identification
Great to see these so well, and a couple is special. In the warmer months when I see these in the northeastern forest, such views tend to be fleeting, and to get anything like this I'd have to spend a few days with a hair trigger looking at everything through a viewfinder.
Do you reckon that is a nesting hole? Looks like one, but I'm not sure what the season is for that. If it is, you'll have many more opportunities to get these two, and maybe some young.

Re: Pileated Woodpecker gender identification
It was definitely a nesting hole in a snag. Unfortunately it weakened the tree and a windstorm broke it at the nest level. This exposed the young to predators.
