    Sun worship

A week or so ago Christina posted an image of a Great Blue Heron (Grey Heron) in an unusual pose.

This morning, I found everybody doing it.

It was a cold night and when the sun rose, the temperature started to rise pretty quickly. I found the Baby GBH and an Adult doing their sunworship pose. There was a Yellow Crowned Night Heron doing the same thing. I also saw a black vulture but it hopped off before I got a shot.

And, of course, the youngsters who haven't quite figured this stuff out yet.

In fact, that one really cries out for a caption.

As usual beautiful shots of a beautiful bird...I am left wondering why their wings looked droopy and both of them so it must be a natural thing, eh?

The babies -- are just wondering what was happening down where their parents are...they will certainly follow their rituals once they grow up...

These are well done and illustrative. Reptiles are well known for warming up after cool nights by putting as much body (and hence circulation) perpendicular to the rays of the sun as possible. It's like tuning a solar cell to the sun - maximizing energy capture. And they tell us these beauties are but reptiles with feathers. Never heard of this with birds, or seen it. Very very nice.

Bird Yoga. This is like the Dhyana position.
