    A present for Mum

My friend's daughters decided to give her a photo for Christmas, what we didn't expect was the antics of the dog, she sat up perfectly posed…then would suddenly snap at a passing fly…. which was often (particularly here in Australia )

a keen eye will spot the offending fly in the first image

That was really funny. Your shots are good. Even in the second photo, I am able to see the fly. Too bad the doggie cannot do the Aussie salute.

I would thank the fly for that second shot, Kay, as the kids' smiles are much more natural and infectious in that one.

I really like both images. However, if they were mine, I'd consider a bit closer cropping!

    Re: A present for Mum

Thankyou all for the kind comments.
I chose the venue to get the lighter grass to try to have a contrast to help bring out some detail on the very black dog.
The day was very grey & gloomy, which was good, but also meant I needed to try for 'no sky' - my husband kindly came along and held a speedlight for me.
I agree on the cropping as well Richard, but they went on to be canvas prints, so I wasn't sure how much I would lose wrapping around the frame.
They came in very tight and actually that was a bit annoying, the framer I used (never having done this before) had either a very slim frame option or a thicker one, which I chose the 'in-between' or middle sized would have been perfect.
So as with everything we learn all the time! They still look good as a pair on the wall, but with the benefit of the retrospectoscope, I should have printed larger!
