    Nikon teleconverters

It seems to be rather difficult to find exact information on this subject. I want to purchase a 1.4x teleconverter. Looking at images of the Kenko 300 pro it appears to allow AF on screw focus lenses and the more recent lenses. Can anyone confirm this and can there be any glass etc fouling problems on specific lenses.

Any information on types that do cater for both styles of AF would be useful too. I can't find any suitable information or photo's of the sigma apo for instance. I understand Nikon never made one for both.

I'm not sure about the 1.4X but I know that the 2.0X doesn't work with DX lenses. The rear lens elements extend outward and can come into contact with the teleconverter. Your manual should have information on which teleconverter is compatible with your camera and related lenses.

Kenko? I don't think the Nikon manual mentions them. I did find one comment that the Kenko pro works with both but Nikon lenses vary so I might buy and find it does work with the screw focus types and not the more recent AF types with in built motors. One fact that is mentioned is that they are chipped so that the camera reads data accounting for the magnification.

Did you check the customer reviews on the B & H website?

Our buddy, Ken Rockwell did a review and mentioned a few issues with Kenkos.

It's worth mentioning that even Nikon teleconverters may not work with all FX glass (kinda-sorta, and probably unintentionally, implied by John's statement). I'm a Canon user, so I can't comment on Nikon specifics, but Canon TCs are basically limited to white lenses like the 70-200mm telephotos and above. I would be surprised if all FX glass is teleconverter-compatible.

B&H has a compatibility chart for several Nikon teleconverter/lens combinations. Supported lenses appear to follow nearly the same rules as Canon, but there's always fine print with TCs.

I think I have - or may have - found the answer. A list from Kenco

    http://www.kenkoglobal.com/pdf/TELEP...bilityList.pdf

Compatibility then comes down to the meaning of AF, AF DC and AF-S

I get the impression that AF needs the screwdriver and AF-S lenses have the motor built in?

A test review is interesting when the images are actually compared. Conditions clearly differ. I would personally try to avoid 2x from past experience but the ones I have used where from misbegotten sources of one sort or another. I don't think Kenko fall into that category.

It was so much easier when I bought my 300D. I bought the Canon one - which didn't fit. Took it back to Jessops who said please try ours sir which was nearly the same price and that did fit. Sadly I don't think Jessops have their own items like these made any more.

The pro 300 series does have the screwdriver fitted. It's nicely made and looks to have good quality multi coating. I went for the 1.4x for a bit more light. They can also tend to magnify aberrations as well.
