    Forth Bridge

Taken from the passenger side of a moving vehicle!

I downloaded PPS8 last night as it looked quite easy and fun to use. I'm a complete novice when it comes to photo editing of any sort, so needed something simple. I love the effects you can achieve with just a few clicks.

Here, I've tried for the old grubby look. The original shot is quite soft as it was a hazy morning when taken. The towers lacked any real definition. So I'm quite happy how this turned out after a bit of playing around.

    Any feedback is welcome.

I like the conversion Gordon. The "old grubby" look works well I think, and you've managed to get rid of a bit of that haze.

Clever image, Gordon. There are, literally, thousands and thousands of images of the bridge, but I've never seen one from this angle or given that treatment. Good one.

The only problem for me is that you now have an aged photo but with modern vehicles which doesn't quite look correct.

Certainly an interesting shot which could be processed in several ways to give a dramatic effect.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I only used this shot to try out the new imaging software to see what I could come up with.

I was hoping to get a shot where the towers lined up, but being a passenger - and in the left hand lane - made that impossible. However, I think the angle that I captured does the structure more justice.

I posted the edited image in one of the mini competitions with the title "The soon to be old bridge". Scottish members might get what I mean by that, but for those that don't know, a new bridge is currently under construction - The Queensferry Crossing - a couple of hundred yards away from this one.

Thus the soon to be old bridge! I thought it was only apt I edited it to look old.

Geoff, I thought the same about the modern vehicles. But then I had a thought (to try and justify them!)

I thought about how our modern day world would look if photography was still in it's infancy (box cameras and the like). I think this would be a good representation of how it might look.

Yes but I think I would still prefer something like a fairly high contrast B&W to give it more of a 1950/60 look instead of a 'Victorian' sepia tint.

Gordon - I was just wondering if it might help the image if you cropped the bottom off so that Fowles van didn't show.

I tried that Steve, but also cropped out the empty sloping roadway to the right, which (to me) took away a nice feature. I could probably crop it up a bit to take the company name out without losing much of that slope.

Gordon, I really like your last version. Very nicely done on the conversion and monochrome PP.

Yes, that B&W version is exactly what I had in mind.

The only slight changes that I would make concern the bottom right corner sky. There are a couple of spots there, possibly flying birds and a tiny bit of a street light which is just showing.

I would clone out these items. Otherwise, I like it.

    Re: Forth Bridge

Your right Geoff. I hadn't noticed that. I had cropped them out of the 'old' image too!

That works better - still prefer the 'aged' look - just a matter of personal choice though.
