Wood Pier, BW
I liked the lines and the geometry of this scene. Comments welcomed.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
Hi Karm, nice image that i think works well in B+W,the only thing i would say is there are 4 or 5 dust spots on the left side that need taken care of,well captured!

Re: Wood Pier, BW
Initially, that pier angle is leading the view too far towards the left side. But then, at horizon level, the pier running at 90 degrees to the right brings everything together and holds interest.
So it works well for me; except for those little spots. Left side and something else possibly a distant bird around the centre of the sky.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
Wonderful conversion!
The pier that leads off to the right doesn't provide any helpful information for me and makes the roofed area seem to disrupt everything. Try cropping so much off the right side that the image becomes approximately square.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
I would be inclined to try Mike's suggested crop because I don't like the vegetation on the right side. I think it softens the geometry of the scene.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
Thanks Wavelength.
David, thanks for pointing out spots. They are dried water spots. My screen is normally so filthy that I can miss things. I'll definitely fix this problem along with a bunch of birds that are mere dots.
Mike, Greg, Mark, John and Geoff, my brain follows Geoff's description of how my image works. I initially tried cropping away the right side and opening up the left side (that contains lots of water). It was okay. Then I tried what I posted and I liked it a lot better. This image has lines moving the eye all over the place. However, my eyes do eventually settle on the image's vanishing point. Mike, I did not try your suggestion. I will. If I like it then I'll post it.
Thanks for good comments.

Nice shot Karm - I wonder about all of the sky in the image and wonder if getting rid of most of it might not strengthen the image (and get rid of the water spots as well).

Re: Wood Pier, BW
Great shot! Although I find the roof is the first thing that draws my eye. It's so bold compared to the rest of the image.

Hi Karm,
Interesting views on crops but I'm going to be different. Crop half of the sky depth off and and an equal amount off the 'left' hand side and see what you think.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
This is a crop Mike suggested. It's a square with some of the right and left sides eliminated. I tried smaller squares but I didn't like what it did to my pseudo vanishing point. Comments welcomed.

Manfred, I'll try and post your suggestion.
Grahame, I tried your suggestion and felt that it too strongly swung the viewers attention to the right.
Isabel, thanks.
Gordon, I agree about the boldness of the triangle (roof) being a bit of a distraction and yet, I somehow like it.
Richard, thanks.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
You won't be surprised to learn that I like this a lot. This new composition places greater emphasis on the subject, which I take to be the shadows. This revision results in the roofed area being an attractive element whereas in the other composition it was a distracting element, though I can't explain why.
I could argue either way whether it's a good idea to eliminate half of the sky; doing so tells a different story, not a story better told.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
As I visit this thread and another were adjacent and while this fails the other succeeds .... both are 'tram-line' shots which attract me and many other photographers but to lead to 'nothing' is not satisfying to me. Unless I have something interesting along the way I restrain myself from pressing the trigger The other thread is the cenotaph photo for comparison.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
For me, the original with the longer pier, plus side pier, still gives the best balance; and it appears to have a smaller, more distant, roof.

Re: Wood Pier, BW
While I think this crop is a stronger composition, it reveals another problem: on the right side (and to a lesser degree on the left) the boards of the pier almost blend in with the water.
