At long last - Yesterday was a lovely foggy, damp, cold day. I know, I know. I'm just a sad old amateur photographer who loves the muted tones of such a day and I probably need treatment for it. However ..........

In the latest edition of Black & White Photography magazine, London-based photographer Kofi Paintsil, in answer to a question about why B & W appeals, answers, "... because it is timeless and allows a mood and texture that can be lost with colour." We periodically have that 'Why B & W' question crop up on here. I also liked the lines created with this composition.

I, too, like the curves in the picture and the way the sky opens up in a funnel. The texture of the road, against the foggy sky.

I probably harp on this too many times when I comment, but people really need to look at this in the lightbox. The tones are much more apparent. Beautiful!

The good thing is that it's nice and light so you can keep moving it on and off the road to avoid the cars. Thankfully, the road's not too busy on a Sunday morning. But getting enough time to get the composition just right was a bit of a b.......!

I was wondering however if you might have inversed the image. It seems like the lanes are located on the wrong side of the road

that reminds me of a motorcycle magazine that did that in the early 1970s the image was of an engine that Read "ASSO" it was supposed to read "OSSA"

Makes me wish the Motor City got more fog, and I have a sudden urge to hit the classifieds and buy a motorcycle.

Did you try cropping the top down to the peak of the hill at left? That might create an interesting diagonal and put the road in a slightly improved relationship to the frame.

One of your beautiful B/W treatment, Donald. I have not been really successful at B/W so I don't do it. With persistence, maybe one day I can be as good as you. At the moment, I will stick to my projects first.

I like this image a lot. The grainy road the the gradations of the fog as you move upward from the road I find especially appealing.

I agree with Jon. I see these type of shots but I just don't seem to be able to produce the "feel" of it. I must try harder.

Wonderful, Donald! I just love the texture in the road contrasting the lack of texture in the fog.

I'm compelled to point out that this image has more contrast and rich, dark tones than what I associate with a typical "Donald image." That this scene commands a treatment that is perhaps different from your norm speaks volumes about your ability to adapt and to be flexible.

Did your wife keep an eye out for traffic for you? (I hope she is coping reasonably well these days.)

Just one complaint for the highway department: The sign indicates a turn to the right. That turn is further down the road, whereas the immediate concern for the driver is the turn to the left.

You're right, Mike. As I was pressing the shutter I knew this was going to a much more contrasty image than I normally produce. I think that was also one of the reasons I wanted to do it.

Interestingly, I think this 5-mile stretch of road through Glenfarg must feature in some motorcycle magazines or websites as a 'road to do'. It's a short route full of twists and turns. There is, somewhere on YouTube, a video of a journey through the glen.

And I need to finish this message now, as I'm off to drive down there on my way to work!
