    Dessert anyone

Today it was my unofficially adopted moms' 92 birthday. A few of us went to the nursing home and had a little party for her. She didn't understand what was happening but we had fun anyway. This was her birthday cake.

First attempt at food pics so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I know why - it looks like a smaller serving... Must admit I prefer #1 and not just because I am greedy probably because I like my strawberries an cream to all be in focus.

Rita, I am not into sweet food even though I can make it. The first one, I can almost taste it. It was a nice comp. I just calibrated my monitors yesterday so it must be my eyes -- she's got a little greenish tinge at the lower part of the cake...the colour of the plate seems to merge with the cake and the overall shot. Maybe lesser yellow and more contrast..?

Hi Rita, I like the first one and would love to learn from you how to shoot food images!

The second is not as sharp owing to the DoF. I think that if you got the entire second image in focus that it might work as well.

    Re: Dessert anyone

They make me want to eat the cake, which means they are successful images!

If you really want to be picky, on the first image: I would pull the focus forward just a bit, say by an inch or use a smaller f-stop to bring the edge of the cake nearest the camera into sharp focus, reduce the exposure by one EV because the highlights are just a little blown, use a different colour background - the table and the cake are too similar, and remove the black spots from the edge of the cake nearest the camera. Bin the second shot. Overall, nicely done.

Hi Frank, I am not sure that I can teach you much as I haven't done food before. In this case the cake was on the table and looked pretty good so I moved unwanted objects away from it and took the picture. Does this help???

Claudio, if your wife wants to bake it was a spongecake with some kind of like a tart pudding and cream in the middle then the cream and strawberries with a glaze on top. And it tasted really good and not too sweet.

Hi Graham, thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I didn't have a choice of background, everything was pretty much the same colour in there. I will take care of the black spots today

OK, using the feedback here is a, I think, better version. Black spots gone, less green, bit of increase in contrast.

Yummiiiiiii..... caramel, cream and cake; i really love that

I like both; first one is typical "buy me" type image; i think there is more art in the making of the second image; ...like focusing at a distant mountain when the foreground objects look OOF....
...and the most important thing Many many happy returns of the birthdays for your Mom( a mother is mother by heart; if she had adopted you by her heart, why mention that unofficial adoption . Sorry if i said something wrong

    Regards

It's an outstanding start Rita, particularly given the results you are getting. The reposted image is even better!

Unfortunately with food, my talent seems to be less in getting a great image and more in the eating, so that the subject doesn't lose any of it's freshness of course!

I have the same problem, eat first pics later. I call it "quality control"
