    Margerie's Face

At this point, the face of the Margerie Glacier is about 350 feet high and about a mile wide. About 100 feet of the glacier height is below the water level.

    Margerie's Face

Margerie Glacier is a 21-mile-long tide water glacier in Glacier Bay in Alaska and is part of the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. It begins on the south slope of Mount Root, at the Alaska-Canada border in the Fairweather Range, and flows southeast and northeast to Tarr Inlet. It was named for the famed French geographer and geologist Emmanuel de Margerie, who visited the Glacier Bay in 1913.

If you are interested in watching the Margerie Glacier calve an iceberg, take a look at about 3:30 into this video:

As you watch the video, realize that this face is about the height of a 25 story building!

    COOOOL. Literally and pictorially. Great.

If mine, might be tempted to remove the top and the bottom and with just the glacier in the frame. Reality and abstract at the same time.

Not a problem, Bobo. Here is one that can be thought of as an abstract without any reference to sea or sky. The chunk in the middle that is about to fall is about the size of a large house.

    Margerie's Face

Here is one where a piece is falling that is about the size of an 18-wheeler. When this happens you hear what sounds like a very loud gunshot followed by the crash into the sea. Then come the fairly good sized waves and the reason why the cruise ships stay back about a mile.

    Margerie's Face

This is what it looks like after a supermarket sized piece breaks off and the deep blue from inside the glacier is revealed.

    Margerie's Face

This one shows the last few of the 23 miles of this River of Ice that is the Margerie Glacier.

Glaciers are one of those subjects that are very hard to get the sense of scale. The description helps do so. I like the calving shots.
