    Louise,

    LR5 allows you to convert using a very powerful color filter that is constructed using seven variable color channels. I haven't used LR 5 to make monochrome conversions, but I can tell from a very quick glance at its capabilities that you could do a lot worse than using LR5 to make them.

    Wow that's amazing. It must have taken a long time, tons of patience and a bit of luck to get such a great shot! It'd be neat to see what else you can do.

    Thanks everyone for your kind comments. As a picture is worth a thousands words I found this tutorial that explains one way of doing it.
