LR5 allows you to convert using a very powerful color filter that is constructed using seven variable color channels. I haven't used LR 5 to make monochrome conversions, but I can tell from a very quick glance at its capabilities that you could do a lot worse than using LR5 to make them.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. As a picture is worth a thousands words I found this tutorial that explains one way of doing it. There are other techniques and electronic equipment to time the drops and the flashes. I hope you enjoy it.http://500px.com/blog/161/how-to-get...op-photography
