If as you mentioned on another post you have worked out selective sharpening I would suggest that probably you can also do selective softening. The flower might be a bit too sharp, a matter of personal preference, but the sharpness of the main subject can be emphasised by the softness of the background. So an overall softening might be more pleasing to you if you also do a 'double' softening of the background.
With my editor having made a selection to selectively sharpen I can 'invert' the selection to deal with the background with other tools.
