first try at telephoto macro yes it will be cropped but it is just so much more

This morning I thought i recalled reading somewhere that I could use my telephoto option to frame my macro shots. This is the best result. I am thrilled with the added detail and depth that this technique gives.
    focal length 14.3 (84.4 in 35mm), aperture 7.17, shutter speed 4.9, ISO 100, F/12

Nice, I like the patterns and textures captured in both versions.

I did something similar, although not really macro, with a 500mm mirror lens. The lens is manual focus and I could not get the shot in focus unless I was at least six feet from the subject.

so far my minimum distance seems to be about 1 foot. If nothing else it could save my old back a few twangs. What is a mirror lens?

Mirror or reflex lens, uses a mirror to fold light like a telescope is designed. Usually manual focus Minolta has an autofocus brand. Fixed aperture with large diameter lens.

in astronomy this design is great for reducing size but it also severely reduces light to the eye. not a problem for astrophotography with means to track. How do you compensate for light reduction?

I try to keep ISO low and use as much natural light as possible, if I need to I could increase ISO. I could probably use an external flash to compensate for available light.

You can also try the mirror lens for shooting video, again you want as much light as possible. When shooting video I will increase ISO.
