    super macro/telephoto experiment

This scene is actually about 5 Cm left to right. I used supermacro and telephoto. I was about 1 foot (30 Cm) away, sitting down and hand held. At this size I like the focus but if I try to crop and maintain size it goes fuzzy wuzzy (tech talk or what). Is this inability to blow up a shot normal for telephoto macro?

Try cropping in camera and see if you get the same dizzying effect. What aperture did you use for this shot? Also, try shooting same subject at different apertures, adjusting exposure as you do so.

Only if it is not really in focus ... the camera appears to have focused on the stem and only the stem and leaves close to it are sharp. There appears to be a band of sharpness across the centre of the picture and the rest is OOF.

Blowing up any image will reveal the parts that are not sharp, nothing to do with using telephoto and macro.

    Brian,

Another thing to consider is that the further you are from your subject any movement caused by hand-holding will have a greater negative impact on sharpness.

I am finding greater sharpness with the macro setting and a minimum of telephoto just for the greater F/ options.
