    Amazement...

    Hi,

New boy here (to the forum at least!).

This is a shot of my 18 month old grandson Jack just as he sees a large male Orangutan for the first time! I'd set myself up to take the picture so it was pre-planned to a degree but I was being jostled a bit by the crowd of onlookers and the conditions were very humid, so I was worried about camera shake and fogging on the lens.

The image was a little soft and I may have over-sharpened it? The original was in colour but I struggled to get the contrast right so I opted to go mono.

Taken at Colchester Zoo with my wife's Lumix G3. I normally shoot canon (40D) but the G3 is a lovely small & light camera for casual shooting and I find image quality pretty much up to that of my canon. Post processing in PhotoShop CS4.

    Thanks for looking,

    Stuart

Images of child are good; figures to right of subject are distracting.
Hope this is of some assistance.

Maybe Stuart can clone out those subjects at the right?...Or blur them quite a bit to give the boy more prominence...???

Yes they slightly bother me, Bruce. But I suspect they can be used to bring the scene together and put it into context.

How about trying a crop from the bottom and left side; or just the bottom and do a square crop; alternatively, crop more from the bottom and have a 5 x 4 size ratio?

Yes, I did wonder about the guy directly behind Jack's head so I'll have a go at removing him. The other (larger) face, bottom right, is my wife (Jack's nan) so I'll have to leave her in I think :-) Could blur her a bit though..

No, I wouldn't (blur Nan), but the other guy is fair game for the clone tool

    Good timing,

    Good timing,
My sentiments as well. Toning down the light bottom left area or adding a slight darkening vignette may be an option.

I think at least the wife is central to the overall image, she is sharing Jack's amazement.
