    Australia Day

It's Australia Day here today, and rather than throwing another shrimp on the Barbie, we decided to have a picnic in the grounds of Government House which was open to the public today. This is the residence of the Queensland Governor, who is the Queen's representative in this state. Just a couple of shots showing this lovely colonial building.

Hi, Dave. I like the shots. Very colorful and they convey a sense of a happy day (like I am sure it is being, to you Australians).

On #1, I would have included the cut parts of the cars (if you had enough space for that, of course).

Thanks for sharing and have a nice Australia day. Rgds,

For a relatively young country you folks have some interesting architecture. Looks like a fun day and a good idea for a way to celebrate the day.

Thanks for your comments and good wishes Otavio, Dan, Nandakumar and George. Otavio I'm afraid that's all of the cars I could get in shot, conditions weren't ideal with people milling around everywhere.

Dave individually the photographs are well taken but I do particularly like the set as it conveys the relaxed celebratory mood of the day. I would have loved to be there so I could soak up the atmosphere and provide the necessary friendly banter....

Thanks LPaul. It will be on next year if you want to drop over - I could probably rustle up a gin and tonic, some cucumber sandwiches and a little Aussie flag for you to wave !

A gin and tonic in one hand and a cucumber sandwich in the other will be more than enough thank you Dave. (no sneaking a flag into the gin just a little black umbrella will be fine)

Oh so beautiful ...those shots were superb. I love them, Dave! and felt like "I should have been home!"

As to the cars, you cut them off equally at both sides, so no worries about them as far as I am concerned...

Thanks Izzie, why don't you have a listen to Peter Allen's "I Still Call Australia Home". It will bring tears to your eyes for sure !

I have both the DVD of Peter Allen and the piano notations for the song. It's just that your shots makes me feel nostalgic about missing Oz. I have not been home for a visit for nearly 4 years, but hubby was there last August, just to make sure that sonny boy who is taking care of my property hasn't turn my house into a brothel... I will be home for a visit in 9 days! I am pretending to be patient but I have been packing and unpacking for nearly a month now...

I like the lighting and detail in the 2nd one, Dave. Shooting a white building in brilliant sunlight is not easy. Did you take this with the 10-22mm? Pity about all the people.

Thanks for commenting Greg. These shots were taken with my 17-70mm Sigma. I wasn't too concerned about having people in them as they contribute to the "Open Day" feel, but I tried to avoid having too many people.

Nice pictures! I went to the open house there a few years ago. A different governor but the same car.

Where's the sound track to go with no 3?

At first I thought it was my car but realized that I don't have a Union Jack on mine

Seriously, very nice images! Happy Australia Day to all down under

    Many thanks Richard.

    Dave

PS: It looks like a Union Jack and you can't see it properly but I think you'll find it's actually the flag of the Governor of Queensland which is similar to the Union Jack but it has a Maltese Cross in the middle. You can actually see this flag in shot 2 on the right.
