Taken earlier this week at Muizenberg beach,Western Cape,South Africa, was a bit of a hurried shot and because of this I think the focus is slightly out, Nikon D3s and Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Neil

The main focus needs to be his face, which seems to be sufficiently sharp.

Such a fast shutter coupled with a wide open aperture are bound to create some potential problems. But I wonder if you had a bit of over saturation coming from his clothes which is why they appear to be lacking in detail, rather than being out of focus?

I've had a look at the original colour version and it doesn't seem to be an issue with over saturation,it just seems like the photo isn't tack sharp which at that shutter speed can only point to the focus.I'm attaching the original for comparison, this has had minimal editing done to it as I prefer to use Nik Silver EfexPro for the majority when converting to B&W. Needs a closer look, Neil, but his face and hands seem fairly sharp to me when viewed at full screen size. I can see every mesh in the net, and can tell that he his holding the footrope, not the headline!

Looking like an interesting shot to me.

Yes, when I download this image and closely examine it with my editing computer there is a slight lack of really sharp focus. Looks OK at internet size but not quite perfect when closely examined.

    It's a great image - I'm speculating as follows:
    1. you're asking too much of that Nikkor (I have one) wide open on full frame, and
    2. you're worrying about a detail that doesn't much matter to the overall quality and impact of a very fine image unless you're going to print it very big for viewers who will get too close to appreciate what this accomplishes.

Thank you for your comments and yes you are probably right Mark its not an image that is going to be printed poster size or any other size so I should not be so critical.
