    Pre Dawn

Probably known to many, but while out this past weekend I was surprised that there was sufficient light twenty five minutes before sunrise to get a decent image. Possibly the long twilight at this latitude combined with the snow covered ground. However it is something I intend to use in future because I quite like the effect of the muted and diffuse light on this old barn. Seems more in keeping with it's derelict nature

You should also try a bit earlier and if you can get close enough, use a bit of flash.

What a sad image of what was once a beautiful structure Trevor. The light certainly compliments, I think we are going to see more of this barn

I would add - and icy condition.

To my mind a great shot. It is hard enough getting it right but you managed to make even the building look like it was freezing in the cold.

I like this shot. I especially like the delicate colors of the changing sky: pinkish at the upper reaches and bluish lower down. It would be quite hard for a painter to show varying colors like that...

I thought, at first, that I'd like bit closer cropping but the line of bush at image left really contributes to a more deserted and desolate look...

I used to whipped my camera out when I see old barns. I have seen many of them in my travels and I shoot them whenever I can. I like your comp. At first I thought the tree at the right side is leaning a little bit to the right but looking at the yellow grass on the ground....they seem straight. The fir still bothers me though...not because the barn is leaning the tree should be leaning too? My brain is killing me...!!! I better go back to bed. It is nearly 2am here.

    I love the muted tones!

Notice that even with such diffuse light, the light reflected on the side of the barn is so different than on the end.

I may try that. I can get right up to the barn, no problem with access. Do I need a larger flash unit than the small one I have (Nikon SB400, the smallest they make)?

The poor spruce tree is the victim of the strong SW wind. As is the barn. The wind can be sustained at 60km per hour (40 mph) with gusts of 90 to 100 (56-62). Last week we had a windstorm with sustained winds of 100 with a recorded gust of over 200 (125). The wind is not frequent enough to deform the tree into one of those bonsai types you see on exposed mountain tops or the seacoast, it is enough to have all the branches on the west side stunted and the branches on the east much longer and more normal in appearance.

That is a bizarre thing I was marvelling at while there. Everything else (barn, trees, wheat stubble)is covered with a fine layer of hoarfrost; except the east side of the barn. The frost was deposited at night so the discrepancy cannot be due to differential heating by the sun. For the life of me I cannot figure out why the east side escaped.

Neat effect as it really differentiates the two sides of the barn.

Nice shot of something worth capturing Trevor. One day it will be gone altogether.

And fairly soon too. In the short period of time (four years) I have embarked on this project to get shots of these old barns and farm buildings a number of them have vanished or been completely flattened. The wood is becoming quite decayed and there is only so much weathering and snow load they can endure.

    Re: Pre Dawn

On the way to our airport there used to be a barn that once in a while I will see someone taking a shot of. Not even 4 years later, it was subjected to zoning and became a "future" commercial property. At the rate the farmers are paying for the levee to prevent flooding, the farmers will not be able to survived. So the property was sold to a commercial concern. Everytime I passed by there I wanted to take a shot, but never was able to. And now it was gone -- forever.
