    Only 7/10 for sharpening though.

For a combined score of 85/100

I agree but where did I go wrong? With so much going on and the focus dead center I got lost.

I find the background distracting,a black background might be a better idea for such a shot because the plant has got so many thin furry leaves and it needs standing out.Nice plant with shiny leaves:-)

By the time I knocked up a portable black background the moment would have been gone

with focus dead center, That would have you focusing on the tips pointing straight out to you. That would move your focal plane closer and make it harder to tell if those actual points are in focus. I think your focus is actually slightly above and right of center. Did you autofocus this because your camera may have chose that area to focus on.
I don't think Colin was saying that your focus was less than it could be, I think he is saying that your pp sharpening could be better. I try to stay away from dandelions, they look to me like they would require a focus stack.

Sounds about right to me, Dandelions are like trees, The closer you get the harder to get clear focus on all of it.

Yes Brian I have been studying autofocus systems lately(trying to understand my camera better) and most af systems use points of detail with the sharpest contrast to pick a point where it can operate best. My Fuji was very reliable in that aspect. And your camera has produced the best image it could of what I call a trap shot.
Oh by the way a 7out of 10 on Colins' scale would make me very happy.
