Pre Sunrise compared to Post Sunrise light

Donald, in a prior posting, mentioned he would like to see this old barn in black and white. It was a surprise to me that he would consider black and white imaging as an option. Be that as it may, I thought to do black and white treatment as well as compare the pre and post sunrise light on the same subject. These are as close to duplicates as I can get.

It might be helpful for everyone to be able to quickly find your color version posted here.

Hopefully you now appreciate why the black-and-white versions also work so well. However, the dead space at the top would be just as important to me as in the color version even though the color version is that pretty pink tone. I miss it in the monchrome versions.

Post-sunrise and we start to get some shadows that, I think, lift it a bit from the 'flatness' of pre-sunrise. With the shadows we get more definition.

I agree about the crop. Just wanted to emphasize the wood grain so people could see the difference the light makes . And make the images as similar as possible.

Interesting little experiment for me. Both in the processing and the effect of the light. The loss of tonal variation with the presunrise light almost kills the image in black and white yet seems to have an ageing and sombre effect in colour.

Interesting the comparison becuase it is usually suggested that the golden hours are better but here we see more shape and form in the pre-GH shot and the GH version is flat and dull despite the shadows cast by the weak early sunlight.

The importance of the golden hour plays a far larger role when making color photos than making monochromes because of the color tones that are usually available only at that time. In fact, one argument for making monochromes is that when photographing at noon, good monochromes can be made when perhaps good color images might not be possible. This isn't to ignore that strong sidelight available only at sunrise and sunset helps make magical monochromes.

As Mike suggested, if B&W conversions are your goal, perhaps the harsh light of midday might serve you better.

Next on the agenda. I massively regret not sticking about to get the hoarfrost on the wood. Adds greatly to the interesting textures.

In my defense, at minus 14C after an hour my fingers had reached my limit. I cannot work the camera controls with gloves on and by increments the cumulative cold seeps into my core and negates any attempt to warm my fingers as my heart and brain seem to like hogging the warm blood.

Check out the Swix Cross Gloves. I just ordered my second pair a few days ago, having worn holes in my first pair. I have no problem working any of the dials or buttons on my camera when wearing them.

When I'm not operating the camera, I will sometimes add another pair of gloves to my hands for improved warmth. Sometimes I will place chemical hand warmers between the outer pair of gloves and the Swix gloves. Other times, I will leave the hand warmers in pockets, insert my Swix-gloved hands in my pockets and hold onto the hand warmers.

I'm trying to decide if I want to brave the cold tomorrow morning before sunrise including walking through partly frozen water. If I do, I will be using my handwarmers, my Swix Cross Gloves and my outer pair of gloves.

You would think that after 32 years of living in this climate I would have bought some handwarmers. You would be wrong.

I just bought my first toe warmers. I haven't had a situation calling for using them and I'm doing my best to avoid such situations. Perhaps walking through partly frozen water tomorrow morning would be a good occasion to use them.
