My first thoughts were Silpha or Necrodes species but the forelegs don't seem to exactly match.

I find this German site to be good for identification.

David and Geoff, from your reference it seems more like the Georissidae from the patterns on the back and the top part of the body. Anyway, that is a very nice shot. I once in a while see this kind here in Missouri but to me it looks more like the ones I saw in the Philippines when I was young (from my recollections because we used to play with them as kids.)

Hi David,

Cute little fella but how did you manage to capture him using flash with no significant highlights or has he got a matt surface?

We get a species here called the Giant Long Horned beetle and I have many of their larvae in my compost heaps. Supposedly they grow to 150cm but have not come across one that size yet

I know the one's you mean,we get them here mainly in summer but I've never seen one of these guys.

As for highlights,as you know these black beetle's are very shiny and a nightmare to diffuse with flash,thankfully he was very patient with meand let me take lots of shots of him,this let me play with the manual settings on my flash
