    Dainty Lighthouse

This is a good example of not being able to get a good composition no matter what you try to do.

The lighthouse and the rocks it is sitting on in Two Rock Passage, Great Sound, Bermuda, is an interesting scene, IF…. you could just eliminate the huge ship in the background!

    Dainty Lighthouse

It’s too big to clone out and would look odd if it were an out of focus white blob… so I can’t think of much else that can be done to keep this image from an inglorious pitch into the recycle bin?

    Any thoughts?

Could you access the rock the lighthouse was on?

May be you should go near the lighthouse and shoot it with the rocks and without ship and without the other stuff background.I would'nt understand what was in the foreground If you didn't explain.Lighthouse with the rocks and sea can be a good scenery on itself:-)

You could bring out the details of the lighthouse, while gradually decreasing the tones of the water leading up to the ship.

OR -- you can remove the lighthouse, leave the rock and make the distant ship and its companion there instead. Good scenario by the way...

I was on a water taxi at the time I shot this, Bruce, and I doubt you could get to this tiny island on public watercraft. On a private boat perhaps but there might be restrictions.

The lighthouse is about 10 feet tall and has a flashing light powered by a solar panel (which is hard to see as it blends in with the background).

I agree Binnur. I really liked the detail in the island's rocks and the lighthouse has a unique look to it. If I had my way, I'd wait for a time when there wasn't a ship tied up at King's Wharf, use a personal watercraft so that I could position the lighthouse better in the image, shoot at sunset, yada-yada-yada...

Unfortunately, like many of the images I capture, this was ad-hoc shooting opportunity while on vacation so the options are often quite limited to what I can do with a 'snap' shot.

I have fun taking the pictures and try to make the most out of them in post processing when I get back home.

Yes, John, that would be possible. In fact, given that it is a consistent water background, I could do a complete replacement of the entire background of the scene but is the foreground scene strong enough to support doing that much work? Maybe. Perhaps if the lighthouse was positioned just a bit closer to the Golden Ratio it might be worth it?

Never mind Frank ,I'm sure you will be luckier with another scene...The pleasure while you take photographs is really important,I feel the same way...By the way, what is this yada-yada thing? yada means 'or' in turkish and the word just fits in.Do you speak Turkish as well?

    No More Dainty Lighthouse

I just love how the folks at CiC keep coming up with these great 'what if' questions! Thank you Izzie!

OK folks. Here is the image, minus the lighthouse, and with a different background.

    Dainty Lighthouse

I found that if I left the island in the foreground and the ship in the background with nothing in between it looked disjointed, almost like two separate focal points that just didn't work well together.

I've heard the term 'yada' used in TV sitcoms but didn't realize it's background! Yes, as slang here it means 'or'. I didn't know that I was speaking Turkish! That's so neat! Thank you for the background information Binnur.
