Try the lens and see what works before buying.
Any "D" lens requires the camera to have a built-in focus motor; something that the D3200 does not have, so autofocus is not going to work.
The 50mm lens is not one I would pick for a crop-frame camera, it's the equivilent of 75mm on a full-frame sensor, so a bit of an odd fit. If you are looking for a "normal" lens, look at the 35mm focal length instead.
thanks for the replies I was offered this lens but was not to sure that is why asked.
GrumpyDiver would you just stick with the 75mm as I have one of them already from what your saying its as good with my camera as the 50mm lens.
Carol - that partiuclar lens (I own one) is a FX lens, i.e. designed to work with a full-frame camera, like my D800. For this camera it is considered to be a "normal" lens, i.e. one that gives you a field of view that is similar to what you see with your eyes.
Putting that onto your crop-frame camera, it will be a "short" telephoto lens. It will be totally different than your 75mm lens (which would have an effective focal length of 113.5mm on your crop-frame D3200).
The 50mm lens will not be a good match for your camera body because the lens will not autofocus, and trying to manually focus it on the D3200 is NOT easy to do and requires a work around. You'll probably miss a lot of shots; I would recommend that you do not buy this lens.
Carol,
This link has a visual representation of the differences.

thanks for all the help I think I will just stay with what I have at the moment and john the link you put here was a big help in making me think why I wanted the lens as I have a lens that covers what I was going to do with it at the moment.so I will save my money and keep saving a bit more and go to the photography show at the N.E.C. in march and see if there is anything there that takes my fancy lol but thanks for all your help I am glad I asked as it made me think what and were I would use the lens never mind why I wanted it in the first place.
Just FYI, the lens that's most similar in function to the 50/1.8D [on film/FX] for a DX camera would be the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G. It's AF-S, so it will autofocus on your D3200.
If you plan on using a lens mostly for head/torso shots vs. full-length portraiture, then a 50mm might actually be fine for you on a DX camera, and Nikon does make an AF-S G version of the 50/1.8 as well.
