Golden Hour at Pomton Lake on a Clear Winter Day

Went to Pompton Lake the next day after a big snow storm. The daylight is long enough now for me to get Pompton lake after work before sunset. It was a featureless sunset that day. There was no dramatic cloud. I managed to get the last golden touch.
BTW, It was the coldest day in this area for more than two decades. Caught flu that day. Need better preparation for the cold next time. C&C welcome.

I like #1 and #5 ...light is very soft and nice in all images though:-) I woud crop #2 from right side to show just the tree.

Nice look to the images, is it my monitor or is the snow on the blue side?

I like the lighting in all of these, Hui. I would happily have the 2nd one hanging on my wall, and the transition through the spectrum of blues in the third captures winter light very well for me. I feel the cold in this one.

I like the light in the trees in the first one, but the composition feels off-balance. I think the rock in the foreground could be eliminated.

    Binnur,
Thanks for your Kind words. Based your your advice, I just corp the #2 and lower the blue color saturation. It really looks better without those sticks on the top right side. Here is the new modified #2.

    Greg,
    Thanks for your advice.

I modified the #2. You can check it at my previous post.

About #1, I tried to corp out the stone in the front and stretched the picture horizontally. It looks good for the new composition. If I visualized this composition when I was at the field, It should be better.
    Here is the revised #1

The actual snow was whiter on the field when I saw it with naked eye. Those strong blue is gotten by increasing the saturation. I personally like these strong blue color on the snow with blue sky.

    Have a guess :)

Re: Golden Hour at Pomton Lake on a Clear Winter Day

#2 appears to have an un-even horizon.

One needs to be careful with horizons like this because where you have a shore line getting further and further away, it'll rise up in the frame anyway (assuming the camera is above the level of the water), but even allowing for this, it still looks a little left-side low to me.

Other than that - pretty good, although I do think you need to remember to go through each image at 100% magnification to check for and remove dust spots and other things that shouldn't be there.

It looks too strong to me; sometimes you can get away with it if it sits somewhere between blue and a more purple hue, but this one is sitting on the cyan side, which makes it look overdone IMO.

    Colin,
Your eyes are really sharp. I revised the #2.

I tried another corp from the vertical version original. It seams better without the small tree truck on the left.

I love scenes like this with the contrasting cool and warm tones. Nicely done.

Often with scenes like that, you can use the tree to "anchor" the shot, so don't be afraid to crop it reasonable close, like I've done here ...

The more I work on this image, the more I feel the "cyan" tone cold color on the snow and sky is not right.. The blue tone in the previous post images have been adjusted already.

Hui,I'm a beginner and one of my first photos in CIC was a waterfall with a blue colour cast. When members saw it they liked the composition and exposure but they didn't like the blue colour cast at all.I think trying to use natural colours is very important ,this is what I will try when the weather gets warmer here. And one more thing, shooting snow is difficult ,your camera calculates the exposure wrongly it is because the camera's exposure is based on grey colour. So if you want to get a proper white colour in snow, you should shoot with +1 or +1.5 exposure compensation. This is what I read in some books, but it is better to check this info with the experts because I'm a beginner

Binnur and anyone who might want to understand photographing snow...here is a fellow whose instructions I follow. He uses a Canon, but his article is not concentrating on that but also what do with it on camera

I hope you find this helpful...
