    Mini Mantis ROT lesson

Surprisingly this morning he was happily sat in the same area he was left last night so I really did not have a major decision as to what to do.

All shot hand held, manual, with on-board pop up flash in TTL mode, yes it's Sunday and I'm being lazy.

So today we try and learn this ROT (rule of thirds) thingy.

Told you we don't work in a square crop very well

    Are we not forgetting something?

    Finally you listen to me

Ok, I'm tired now and not working any more today

At least his rates are cheaper than a human model

The more we work a subject the more we find we can do with it. Nice set.

I don't think ROT applies with this guy.

You are meant to break the ROT in these shots. I love #1 -- he decided to play your game and you fell for it. In shots like this, you'd like to turn captions on... I agree about the rate of your 'model'...Maybe your 'model' wasn't a he but a she the way it prances for you to take its photo...??? Flirty.

    Isabel, Bobo, James and John,

Thanks for commenting, I have given up choosing favourites with all of these but No 4 reminds me of an image I saw a while ago of a model relaxing after a shoot looking worn out.

I've just looked at these again with my reading glasses on and noticed the noise, ah well.

Really cool Grahame... my favourite is #5... love its character..like its been naughty and sitting in the corner and it turns to look at you , love the DOF in that one as well. Great set. I actually like the effect the noise has given it in #5, sort of softened the BG a little more..and Mantis stands out more.

    Binnur, Claudio, David & Frank

    Thanks for the comments.

    Binnur,

Some people actually keep these as pets in the UK where I used to live.

    Claudio and David,

Just for info the first two of these were captured using Auto Focus single point, why, because I thought I would play.

Looking in ViewNX you can see the 'Focus Point' box and within the box area alone it ranges between very in focus to well out of focus parts due to the DoF just around the eye, head and face area. A good example of why Auto Focus is very much a gamble when your subjects are so small with irregular shapes.

With a smaller aperture from the f11 I used for those two it may have been feasible although another problem is that once you move off target focus goes way out and you are back looking for the critter within his leaves.
