This is the Muñoz family, they work with us in our country place. Their house is about to fall down (they found water in the fundations. We are going to rehabilitate a barn as a house for them, that is why for the time being I cannot take photography classes.

I viewed your image again and I am slightly puzzled regarding the focus... The focus does not extend from the mother to the husband and children to her rear. However, what puzzles me is that the foliage at the left edge of the image and to the rear of the husband seems to be in focus.

Maybe it is just the way my monitor is showing the image.

There was a similar comment regarding the focus on a previous image being a bit puzzling so I also had a closer look at this one. Firstly, Catalina is manually focusing due to a faulty lens and has a new one that she has not yet fitted.

Looking at the Exf this was shot at 1/60s, f4 and at an FL of 19mm. Basing the group size (width) of the forward subjects plus the space I estimate that this was taken at a distance of roughly 1.75mtrs.

DoF calculator gives the following;
Near focus distance - 1.3 mtrs
Far focus distance - 2.75 mtrs
DoF - 1.47 mtrs

Looking at the husband you will see foliage over his shoulder confirming closeness to the background. In addition there is foliage adjacent to the wife's shoulder which appears 'sharper' which suggests this was on the same plane as the wife.

So to me it appears what we are seeing is an image for which the aperture chosen would have been ok if Catalina had focused roughly half way into the depth of the group but a knowledge of DoF is required to understand the need for this. I suspect the focus point was in front of the wife.

The image was also shot in programmed auto mode which has a tendency to 'open' up to avoid low speeds.

Interested to hear if others agree with this diagnosis.
