    To the Top

I'm not sure what the attraction is in risking one's life like this but it looks like some folks like to do these things.

My eldest son want's me to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with him. At 19,000 feet I think I'd be safer walking around the base of the mountain with my camera photographing wild leopards than being on the side of that mountain!

These climbers are in the Arches National Park in Utah.

    To the Top

    C&C welcomed!

I don't get it either. Maybe when I was a teenager. For sure if I thought it would impress a girl. Different strokes...

LOL. In this case it is a girl doing the climb and the guys are the ones being impressed! One of the guys likely ran the safety rope to the top though.

The folks in the photo probably think I'm nuts for sitting around watching an eagle nest all day hoping the birds get hungry enough to go catch a fish.

I have to admit when I was young I did a lot of crazy stuff. Later in life I finally figured out I was really only trying to prove something to myself. Old enough now and done enough not to feel like I need to do anything death defying to prove anything else to myself. Plus have others relying on my state of health. Maybe still trying to prove something through the lens though

There are drugs for that. To either stop it or make them visible depending on one's preference

When one gets to a certain age in life Dan, it becomes a health management problem. You try to stay healthy and healthier than when you were young and sort of foolish trying to prove something to someone or something to yourself.

Frank...that was a cool shot! I like the colors very much.

I hear you loud and clear. In my case I don't think it is as much trying to prove something as having one heck of a good time!

The encouraging feedback is appreciated though, kind of like a warm hug from an old friend. Just sorta makes you feel good that you can help others learn as you are learning from them.

Imagine the fear, exhilaration, and bravado of the very first person to make it to the top, while others stand in awe, at least I hope they get something like those feelings out of their endeavor.

Thank you Izzie. The colors in some of these rock formations are more intense than one would expect, but in this location, that variety of color is quite common.

Thank you for the feedback John and David. Much appreciated!

The rationale behind such behavior is really quite simple, "arrested prefrontal cortex development"...
that's the area of the brain involved in judgment, or lack thereof which is fully explained here...http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3711850/

That is some heavy reading Chauncey. I'm not sure I could boil that link down into a succinct one sentence description.

    Re: To the Top

I rarely add my photo to a thread begun by someone else. I'm doing so now only because the discussion doesn't seem to be about the photo and instead seems to be about the insanity of some people and stuff about women climbing these rock faces.

This is the same rock formation captured in 2004 on slide film that Frank captured in 2007. Notice how the rock hasn't changed with age. Fortunately, I've learned since then not to darken the sky so much with a polarizer.
