BIF with micro 4/3?

Hi,

I have recently bought a micro 4/3 body and a couple of lenses to use as a walk about, light, travel camera.

There are a couple of micro 4/3 dedicated forums where folks post images. I've just been looking at one containing birds in flight pictures. I suppose I should whisper this but they are dire.

There is now some seriously expensive pro glass appearing for these cameras. I wonder if anyone on CiC has managed to capture decent BIF images with micro 4/3 kit?

Not your typical BIF but shot with the EPL-1, 40mm, ISO400, 1/400s, f/4.5. I'm sure I have some real BIF somewhere.

I only did RAW conversion and tried to adjust black/white points.

Beautiful BIF and well positioned. That new toy will be handy. I have taken BIFs with a 3 fps so it is possible with enough reach.

Thanks, I do have other lenses, this was taken with the kit 14-42mm and I also have the 40-150mm and a 70-300mm, just didn't have the others with me that day. The camera takes some getting used to, the write speed to disk is very slow, so I normally shoot in RAW only as it seems to write to the disk faster than when set at RAW/jpeg.

Only 1 type or other. Jpgs will give you more buffer space due to smaller size so camera will not freeze after a couple of RAWs.

If possible see if you can try out one of the ultra-fast SD cards, I found switching to one gave me a bit better writing speed.

The card I'm using is a Promaster 8GB SDHC Professional High Speed, PN 8491. I'll see what else is available for an Olympus PEN.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Sandisk Extreme Pro rated at 96mbs, probably higher now.

Hi Dave, John,

I'd second the recommendation for Sandisk Extreme Pro cards - but do buy from a reputable source (at the standard price), not 'super cheap' or from an auction site, or you may get a 'fake' that will disappoint.

My daughter uses a Pany GH2 for BIF, she shoots jpg only - sigh, I have tried to 'convert' her

She has the 100-300 Pany lens for it and sure, although she has some 'AF misses', she gets some good ones.

I'll see if I can get her to contribute here with some feedback on how she finds continuous rate, etc. maybe even a picture.

I'd say key to success with BIF is: practice, a long enough focal length (so you don't need to crop a lot), more practice - and probably something above the basic model in any manufacturers range (Dave - you didn't say which make or model of body you acquired) for a better AF system.
