    Hello from Nelson, NZ

Hello! I'm very new to this photography stuff and wonder if I'll ever be able to learn all there is to know?! I've always loved looking at photographs but every time I tried to learn more about the subject, I was scared off by how very technical and scientific it all seemed. Finally, I decided I would just have to try very hard and bought a Nikon D90 a couple of months ago. I'm slowly working my way through a photography book (very slowly!) and have no regrets buying the D90, so far I think it's great. It's taken some nice photos in Auto mode and perhaps fooled me into thinking I might be good at this photography lark! I've just found this site, so I'm really looking forward to reading everyone's opinions and advice on here. (also, sorry in advance for any really stupid questions I'm sure I'll be asking very soon!)

Wow, someone else on here in Nelson! Thanks for saying hello Colin. What a small world it is! Anyone else?? I've been in Nelson for three and a half years, it's a beautiful place. Moved from somerset in England (another beautiful place!) with my husband and three children.

    Hi Vanessa,

Might be a smaller world than you think ... my parents were both from England (I've got a British passport, but I was born in New Zealand). You should pop around sometime!

That would be great, I would love to see some of your photographs. Is that Lake Rotoiti as your avatar?

Sounds like a plan - perhaps next week (shaping up to be a pretty busy week this week). Yes - it's Rotoiti. Have a look through the rest of my gallery if you're a bit bored: http://www.pbase.com/cjsouthern

Next week would be good, thanks. Had a look at your gallery - I love the boat ones (break left and calm before the storm) they are amazing!

    Hi Vanessa,

Welcome to the CiC forums from me too.

First let's clear one thing up - there is no such thing as a stupid question
So, ask away and we'll do our best.

I'll start with two for you:
What lens(es) do you have for the D90?
What sort of subjects do you like shooting?

    Cheers, Dave

PS Don't let Colin talk you into buying a Canon
and do remember to ask to see his "tripod strength" demonstration in person.

Thank you Dave for the nice welcome and for being kind about stupid questions, although you will be taking that back soon, I'm sure! I bought the D90 with the 18-105 lens, which I'm happy with for now, although a macro lens is next on my list. I think I like landscapes best, but probably because I love nature so much. I also think landscapes are the easiest thing for me to photograph at the moment as they don't move, unlike animals and people! I also like those close up photos of flowers or leaves, which is why I want to get the macro lens and try it for myself.
I've been looking for advice on tripods, so I have actually seen Colin's tripod photos - what a laugh! And I do think it's worthy of a hyperlink!

I reckon Colin's avatar is Lake Rotoiti - taken with a wide angle lens. Here is my picture of the same site.

    Hi Grant,

I reckon you'd be right! I had the boat on the last a couple of days before and saw some very colourful clouds at sunset (no camera with me of course!), so I popped back a couple of days later (it's about an hours drive from where I live), but got there a bit too late in the day (I waited for my favourite soap (TV show) to finish!) - in the end I just set the camera up on a tripod and had it take a shot every minute; wasn't sure if I'd captured anything worthwhile until I got back home (I was talking to a French medical student the whole time), but ended up with my best seller (sold anothe one yesterday in fact).

I tried to do it in the style of the great Ansel Adams - so it's full title is "Lake Rotoiti Wharf - A Tribute to Ansel Adams"

    Colin,
I think you have done justice to your tribute to Ansel Adams. Much better than my sickly over coloured version. Much as I love NZ, I must say that your TV programs leave a little bit to be desired so I wonder if you saw the series "Art of Photography" which featured the early photographers and much work by Adams?
By the way, I was interested in your comment about setting the camera to take a shot every minute. How exactly, do you do that? I can see that it would be very useful when the scene is changing rapidly and also, as you say, release the photographer to chat to any attractive Scandinavian backpackers just who might happen to be passing.

I don't think New Zealand produces a lot of TV content compared to the USA and UK (which is mostly what we get), although our national soap opera "Shortland Street" has passed the test of time (will be especially goot this weeks as it appears that Kieren (played by ex Coronation St actor Adam Rickitt) will finally get busted

    I use a Canon TC-80N3 Timer/Counter

    Hello Colin,
Your advice re the timer was very helpful. I have put it on my birthday wish list. By way of thanks here is a photo I took last year. No timer, unfortunately, I just had to point and shoot. I will let you guess as to the location.
    Regards

Wow! You've trumped me. Great photos. I couldn't wait around for the sky to turn that magnificent yellow on account of my family urging to have dinner at the fish'n'chip shop on Wakefield Quay. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
