    As Night Falls

I took these shots in the city last night. I was actually looking for some nice light around sunset but that didn't eventuate so I stayed on as night fell. It's interesting to see how the light changes between 20 and 40 minutes after sunset.

Perspective correction done in pp and Nik Colour Efex Pro Detail Enhancer used to bring out the clouds.

    Comments welcome

All nice, Dave. I think #2 is slightly better as it is cleaner than the others. Well done!

In my usual contrarian way, I prefer the first of the images. Because there are fewer bright lights there seem to be stronger lines and better defined buildings, although the dominant "black stump" building is not regarded as having great architectural merit.

    All nice though.

Nice set and interesting to see the change. We've been trying to decide whether to head north or south on our next visit to Oz. Your posts are tipping the scale. Someone from Melbourne needs to get busy.

That's a tough choice actually ! We visit Melbourne regularly to visit our daughter and her family and we love it there.

Nicely done, I prefer #2. IMHO the pier in the foreground of 1&3 takes away from the subject.

    Thanks

Thanks Tim. I agree with you about the piers but it was just not possible to keep them out of shot from my shooting position.

    Like them all!
Was #2 taken before #3? It has a longer shutter speed, but wasn't there more light than in #3?
    I'm new to night shots..

Thanks for commenting Nancy, and well spotted with the shutter speed question !! I asked myself the same question when processing.

Yes number 3 was taken a short while after number 2 so why the shorter exposure ? Well there were a couple of things at play

    • My in-consistency at setting the exposure. (#2 was a bit over-exposed but recoverable in RAW processing - exposure was set to -0.35 in pp)
    • The two shots were taken in two different directions and #3 was taken with a longer focal length. There was a lot of light coming from the bridge and in #3 I was trying to stop it over-exposing if I recall correctly.
