    Summer Melt (ICM & OE)

    This shot is almost sooc: the movement was intentional but the over-exposure was the result of a seniors moment. Still, I like the result and decided to keep it. When viewed in sRGB the sky and foreground turned white though, so I brought the cream cast back with pp.

    One question : does this kind of extreme over exposure damage the sensor in any way? The shot was taken at f22, 1/5 s, with +2.6EV on a very bright day.

    You weren't shooting into the Sun so no problem.

    Greg;

    I like it but I wonder if a tighter crop that loses about half the sky and the right side to the squiggle? It's a fun technique, if a bit unpredictable, isn't it?

    I thought of the Japanese artist Chihiro Iwasaki when I saw this image. She specialize in watercolor 'sketches' of children that were primarily on stark white backgrounds.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Shane. Is this better? I like that seagull on the right so I want to keep it in the frame.

    I enjoy this technique though it can be frustrating. Opening the folder on the computer is like opening a lucky dip.

    I should add, my decision to spend a bit of time with ICM again is inspired by Sharon's wonderful work and your own beautiful landscape recently.

    Greg,

    I like the comparison to a lucky dip, it made me chuckle! To be honest I didn't recognize the squiggle as a bird until you mentioned it and now I that see it and I'm not sure if it is because you mentioned it or this crop had made it more apparent.

    I hate to be indecisive but I wonder if it is now a bit tight on the right (the bird doesn't have enough room to move now)...so, maybe keep the same aspect ratio as the first and take a bit off the left (I like her position in the second version) and a similar amount off the sky? This is just a personal opinion and I'm not really sure if it is am improvement so I would encourage you to go with your gut in terms of a crop. I appreciate you posting the crop as I am always amazed by the differences that a crop can make and I learn a lot when I do this on my own images and hope that you find the exercise helpful as well.

    Sharon does create some amazing figural images and I'm happy to see others experimenting so I say keep it up! I have a couple images in mind for this weekend and want to try and incorporate multiple exposures and possibly ICM. That memory card will have some gems or a lots of junk
