Photographs capturing the past - a vanished world in London and beyond

Here are some photo's showing a lost world in London. Some of it makes very intresting reading, and is something we'll never see again. Great in a way because the smog would have been terrible, it's no wonder they had to clear it todays rain would have made it horrible to bear.

I just checked through the first and second series - really very interesting work; I find particularly the blend between past and present fascinating. But some smog pictures also are very impressive. Reminds me of something I once read: are these pictures fascinating because they provide a window into the past, or because of they are well-made representations (like pictures of Canaletto which we appreciate in their own right, and not because they provide a window to historical Venice)?

Her's another link I found. it's something which is just as eerie. It shows historical events happening, and what the area looks like today. One is of the airfield where the Hindenberg crashed in Lakehurst, and what it looks like today.

    Thanks for looking.

A local Photographer produced quite an interesting exhibition of similar half and half shots of my local town for it's Guild year last year. What was so depressing was how little had changed in some areas and how in others, modern utilitarian architecture had replaced building that were much more interesting.
