Sana river at sunrise

Dear fellows,

I shot this one during sunrise, as the first lights appeared in the early morning. I liked the way the water was flowing through the dozens of rocks. This location is close to a small Village called Sana (yes, the river's name). C&C welcomed, as always. Have a nice weekend!

It is nice..Did you use any ND filters for long exposure Otavio?Or was your exposure long enough already for silky water because you shot during sunrise?

Hi, Binnur. I used a ND4 filter (It is a 2 F-stops and allows a 4x longer exposure for the same ammount of light). It was still practically dark, although the photo might suggest it was a clear day.

Thank you Otavio, I have got a 10 stop ND filter,I only tried it once before the weather got cold and it worked fine in the afternoon.May be I can use my polarising filter for sunrise shots like yours ,it gives you 1,5 or 2 stops longer exposure like a 2 stop ND.

You're right, Binnur. If you dont need a really long exposure (just a couple of seconds, instead), the polarising could be more apopriated than the ND10.

I just got the Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo 2 days ago and hope to start taking some of these types of shots.
We're you in the water with tripod? Or were you lucky with the curve of the stream? Am on the hunt for a tripod next and wondered how to judge one for putting it in this type of water.
I hope I am not hijacking...

Nancy,I would try to put my tripod on some rocks instead of running water in order to avoid vibration..

Hello, Nancy.

This was shot @ F11 . Other shot info are: SS=32 seconds, ISO=160, Focal length=18mm. IR remote releaser used. I was not in the water. I climbed a big rock that was in the middle of the river and mounted the tripod on its surface. It gave me a nice vantage point. For landscapes you might want to get a solid tripod that can hold the camera body at least 1,5meter high, as this is really usefull to reach a desireable angle in many situations. Consider, also, its weight. Mine is 2,5kg and is ok to bear, even when trekking down for a waterfall.
No hijacking taken at all!

It probably sounded like a dumb question. I thought the stream may not have been moving that fast and might allow a sturdy tripod. But I actually am not brave enough to venture in with my gear yet anyway

This is really a lovely shot, Otavio. You've composed it perfectly to give a good sense of the location, include enough green to give it a rich color, and yet maintain the stream as the main element. Plus you have it vanishing nicely into the distance. And the technical details are handled well. Really a well done shot. One thing I will mention, and it may only apply to me, is that when I view the large version, my eye is immediately drawn to the spot of lichen on the dark rock just below center of the frame.

There are no dumb questions, Nancy. We are all here to learn! You can actually use a sturdy tripod with its legs into the water but, as Binnur mentioned, it can cause a small vibration and when you are dealing with long exposures you have to fight against the minimal vibration that could occur, as it could ruin the shot.

So do I. Exception: if you have to go inside the water, for a better angle, and it is just a calm water right next to the border, with a good tripod. Anyway, land/rocks are always more stable. Regards,
