    Joe, I submit that your getting up-close to the birds is a wise thing, as is focusing on the head.
    A fair number of birders use a Better Beamer [url]http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3651[/url for brightening the eyes at those distances.

    Aside from that, the decision remains...how much of the milieu does one keep in the image.
    Sounds like an artistic question to me.
