No, I am not suggesting a change...just curious about preferences. Apparently sometimes we do not have a choice. Our (my) first dog here in the US is a girl German Shepherd. We adopted her from the rescue because our youngest son wanted a dog and had chosen her. Hubby and I didn't have a say in it. She was an ex-druggie dog from an ex-bf of Janet Jackson who went to jail. Hence, the name JJ. She passed away 5 years ago, at 16 years of age. I prefer a boy dog, a Rottweiler particularly. That was Cooper. He died of Canine Renal Failure when he was nearly just touching 9 months old. She was small version of a Rottie. Very, very intelligent for his age... 'Picked up Tucker in Texas for distraught hubby, another boy dog. Then sonny boy came home from North Dakota with two dogs in tow, a girl blue heeler and a boy Corgi. Cooper and Tucker were my choice. I like male dogs. I have no idea why. Hubby is the victim here - he has to accept the family's choices, not his. He likes girl dogs. But we are happy with Tucker. One day in one of our walks we met a man and his dog, like the start of old stories go...he explained that the female of the species are "family dogs" whereas the male of the species are a one-person-dog. I do not know if this is relevant but Cooper followed me everywhere I went. Even my husband accepted that he was mine through and through. When we got Tucker, he tried his best to suck up to Bill until he softened up to him. They became two peas in the pod for nearly 4 years now...then we got Roxie (BH) and Huey (Corgi). Roxie is supposed to be mine but she sucks up to Bill at times. She is an all-around doggie, too smart for her own good.

Izzie, having been around dogs all my life, the only conclusions I've reached about them is that, much like people, they are all individuals with their own personalities. There are definately breed traits/tendencies but no guarantees on behaviors. I've never heard the gender related preference that you mentioned.

Great picture Dan. I had a black labrador dog maned Jasmine and she did thing like that. Seeing the first picture made me smile. In the send one, Grace is very "graceful". Good shot.

Brian...this one is a female? Well! looks male-ish to me and by that look in its face, I wouldn't want to mess with him/her...beautiful dog...I bet despite her stance here, she's jelly too.

It's a friends dog and female. I liked the facial expression and the paw on the torn cover of the tennis ball. It doesn't really indicate any sort of fierce possessiveness. It is more like "Do you know what to do with this thing or will somebody have to show you?" Originally Posted by IzzieK

Louise, glad the memory brought a smile to your face. They can be such good company but they don't stay around long enough.
