1st bird shot
OK this is a starting point and I realise that the surroundings are a bit busy and that branch on the left is a distraction.
However, I'm now able to get some bird photo's after buying a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 2x teleconverter.
This was my best effort today and will have another go tomorrow.
Any tips, C&C welcome.
Sony A99, ISO 100, F/7.1, 1/250 with flash at 400mm
Cheers, Greg

Re: 1st bird shot
Greg,
Really nice and sharp. With an A99 you cannot default with exposure.
Cut the branch on the left before you take the next shot.
The 70-200 and 2x tele works very well for you. As a matter of interest, at what distance were you shooting - with flash?

Re: 1st bird shot
Thanks Andre. I'm looking forward to having another go tomorrow.
I was sitting at the base of the tree and the bird was about 5 metres from me up in the canopy

Nice image; commendably good, especially for your first bird click

The bird looks sharp and clear,I'm sure you will get a better composition next time

Re: 1st bird shot
This one has worked fine, Greg.
My chief tip for this sort of shot, and you probably already do it, is to just use the centre autofocus point; or manual focus if you have the time. And preferably on a tripod.
False focus is a common problem for birds in foliage, or on bird feeders for that matter.
