Hi Bernard,I have got a new 70-300 lens too..I haven't tried it much yet but with my little experience I can tell you 300 mm is not enough for shooting birds because they usually run away It is usually ok with piegons but sea birds like cormorants run away easily.I hope you can find some birds which stand still so that you can shoot happily

Try bringing the birds closer to you ,with calls or bait. Study them they are creatures of habit and can be predicted.

Congratulation on the new lens. Working at the extended range of your new lens I think you will find using it requires you also carry a mono/tripod. Very few can consistently remain rock steady at the longer range and without support available you may find you have less keepers.

Hi Andy, cormorants usually live in the water and they don't always fly away, they just swim away when they feel that someone is around ,may be 'swim away' is the right verb I should have used, excuse my language

Binnur, my sincerest apologise, I couldn't resist my flippant comment. There are many vagaries of birds and animals behaviours and idiosyncrasies that we take for granted but just to have the opportunity to take images of them wherever they are or whatever they are doing is just great. Happy shooting!
