Since I was freezing; the sacrifice needn't be in vain

For those of you in warmer climes; to get the full impact hold two bags of frozen peas on your cheeks and one on your forehead while standing in ice water with ice cubes in your hands.

Not an earth shaking image, but needs to be shared as otherwise the discomfort was in vain.

Very nice colours in the sky..Don't you think the snowy area is a bit dark?

Just great. Easy to overdo these, and you haven't. I agree with Binnur though - I don't think a gently bring-up of the lower third would be cheating - the snowy foreground probably registered brighter to the eye than to the sensor. To do this would add a little balance.

I was wondering about a very slight crop from the foreground to reduce that area of darkness. But I'm not really sure how best to lose a similar amount from the sides.

This is a very tranquil scene. I tried brightening the snow and liked the results.

Fortunately, I ran out of hands before I got to the part about standing in ice water.

Lighter snow as requested. Hopefully I haven't overshot the mark. Bit difficult to know when to stop but I do agree the snow does seem better rendered lighter

Yes, that makes a better balance for me.

It looks better IMO the snow seems a bit too blue but let's see what the other members will say

I'm with Binnur on the blue - a titch less might work better but the brightness seems just right. There is some very nice reflection of the oranges in the mid distance - and a wee bit of warming with a soft brush might pick that up a bit more. Overall though, simply great.

Though this image won't get you on television again, it's definitely no slacker.

I like the brighter snow and its blue tones. They're a pleasing, realistic contrast with the warm tones in the sky.

The snow is actually quite dark before sunrise and to add to this there is a huge dark cloud behind me that the snow is reflecting. This was taken about 15 minutes before the sun cleared the horizon. Regardless of that, aesthetically the snow is better when brightened.

I was aggressive in lightening . I changed the hue to light blue, increased the luminance to max and dodged it until it looked quite queer to me. Getting close to a Hallmark Greeting Card! Still; it looks as it should not as it was. Thanks for the advice as it greatly enhances the image

I'm not much into sunrise/sunset pictures - but this is absolutely great.
The lightened foreground really does it for me.

How long did it take you to recover from the ordeal?

Thanks Kris. Glad to know the sacrifice was worth it.

I should be warmed up by mid May

The brightened version is much nicer, Trevor. I don't understand people's propensity to want the blue taken out of the snow. That's what color is appears to the eye when not directly lit. Why change it?

We live on a mountainside and get some beautiful sunrises/sunsets on the mountains across the inlet. But even stepping out for a few minutes this time of year it tough to talk myself into. Good for you. You're good till next fall

After standing in a snowdrift up to my cajones to get a better angle on an owl, I feel your pain. In regard to the blue of the snow, I think it was pretty close to what I see every morning the sun clears the horizon. Members from warmer climes may not realize that snow can vary from blue to white to grey to pink dependent on time of day and weather. I am always in a quandary as to whether I should represent it as it is or as others think it should appear. A couple nights ago it actually glowed during the heavy snowfall we had in my neck of the woods

I am with Dan...I like the blue for the emotion and the feeling of cold. I just cannot imagine being in one again for quite sometime, hopefully with the warmer weather here in the Midwest we won't be too spoiled. Very soon we will be complaining of the heat...

Actually I am good until tomorrow at 7 am. The shot i was after never materialized as the rising sun vanished into a cloud bank.Try again tomorrow when it will be minus 25, but no wind.

You are right Randy ,I hardly see snow where I live and I really don't know how its colour change according to light conditions.I think it is like sea,the colours always change in sea according to the weather conditions. That's why I said ' let's see what the other members will say about the colour of snow' in my post.I think the best way is represent it as it is,if it looks blue or pink it is better to leave it as it is
