I found out the story of the ship..

I couldn't change the title of my last thread which is 'A ship...' So I decided to start a new thread for members curious about the story of the ship I shot.I think Frank's curiosity is so infectious that this morning I couldn't stop myself cycling to the harbour where the ship has been landed and I found out the story at last

They didn't let me in because it was customs area, but I was able to see the huge ship from the entrance already.I talked to some workers at the entrance. They told me that the ship is not broken down,it is a ship which carries LPG and it has come to the harbour because it is time for maintenance and a special team from Turkey and a team from the ship's country work together to change the tubes which carry LPG.There is a huge lifting crane next to ship now and it is used for changing the tubes. The reason why the boats towed the ship to the harbour was that the ship was so huge that it had to be very careful and very slow to come closer to the landing pier. The ship is 280 meters and it is longer than the landing pier which is 215 meters.

I would love to take some photos of it from different angles, but I wasn't allowed

Could you put a link back to the original post?

That would help with this one.

Interesting. Easy to imagine they keep up with everything on her, the paint job says it all.

LPG cargo? That would explain the peculiar shape and the bright red - for immediate noticeability and a warning to be very careful around her. Any chance you were able to get the her name, Binnur?

That much LPG could cause quite an explosion if detonated. Having worked in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a number of years I did some research on the collision of the French munitions ship Mont Blanc carrying the equivalent of almost 3,000 tons of TNT and the Belgian War Relief vessel Imo in Halifax harbor on December 6, 1917. The result was the largest man-made explosion prior to the detonation of the atomic bomb. The detonation vaporized the Mont Blanc, destroyed Halifax, killed 2,000 and injured another 9,000. Eventually, pieces of the Mont Blanc were found as far as 3.5 miles away.

    Thanks,

It's an interesting operation. Notice that the tug at the back is aimed the wrong way. That is the brake if all else fails. Watching tugs work a ship that is less than highly maneuverable is very interesting.

    Binnur,

We are all (well I am) waiting to know what the name of the vessel is!!

I took a look in that linked database and there seem to be quite a few similar red painted ships out there of that length.

If you can find the name from your picture, (or by another cycle ride) and perhaps also let us know the name of the harbour she is in (Ok if you don't want to reveal that, but 'Turkey' brings back no results. I am sure I could guess it, but you may be able to speed the process).

Then we can find out more about the ship.

Ian,is it legal to announce the name without their permission? I photographed it from far away and I don't think there is anything wrong with it.I already know the name and I looked for it in the website you gave me in the previous thread and I couldn't find it either. But I have found some information about it in wikipedia.

    Hi Binnur,

I don't know the laws of your country, but given that I am pretty certain the information is out there on the internet, with a bit of diligent searching, I think it is generally considered 'publicly available information' and I am well aware of other ships being announced on forums. Seems it is only when they are military cargos that anyone might get 'upset' about it.

However, it was only for interest, and I don't want to get you into trouble.

I am quite happy to let it rest at that point.

Hi Ian,I talked to a lawyer this morning about uploading photos of ships and announcing their names in CIC.He says the same thing as you said,it is public information and there is no problem with it.So the name of the ship is 'Excellence' ,She can be seen in the URL you posted .She left for Mediterranean Sea this morning with the help of tugs.I think workers at the harbour gave me wrong information about carrying LPG,it actually carries LNG according to info. on the internet.

All vessel movements are considered public. They are, after all, pretty tough to hide and arrival in port and handling them takes some scheduling and logistics. You can actually look up a lot of ships at Marinetraffic.com and upload pictures. So, if you see a ship and wonder where it's from and where it's going take a look. You can use the live map feature.

If you are into aircraft, you can do the same thing at flightaware.com. The link is my local airport but you can use the site to find your own.

    Brian,
I used to work on a game fishing charter boat and AIS was great for killing time..

On competition days there would be angst amongst crews revolving around who forget to turn off the AIS when leaving port so that others could not see what grounds you were heading for.... some very funny radio chatter at 04.30

You should turn it off just before a radical course change.
