Views from the Brisbane River

These are three images resulting from my recent ferry trip up the Brisbane River. Comments and suggestions more than welcome as usual.

The first is pretty much straight out of the camera, the last is cropped sideways quite a bit - it was originally landscape mode - and the saturation has been increased, but there are no other significant changes. The second one has been cropped a bit and the colours, especially of the sky, changed with saturation, etc, but all changes were global. I can't remember exactly how I did it.

I am having trouble understanding colours and their manipulation at present but that's a big subject more suitable for another thread.

#1 is very nice; second is not bad; third is fine too

The only critique is on the first image and its based solely on my inability to remember names. I would have captured the full name of the restaurant so I could provide its location/information to someone asking. I also like the construction site image.

Hi Tony,#1 is a crowded composition for me,I would crop #2 from the bottom a little bit,#3 is fine as it is but I would shoot with different light conditions and with different angles if I had the opportunity,because IMO a lifting crane with clear details is nicer than a silhouette.

I agree very much with John about the name of the place in #1. 'Shouldn't have been cropped. It is nice though...I like it. The two silhouettes are just fine...but I prefer #3 of the two presented.

For me, Tony, you have a difficult scene with the first image.

Yes it is a confused and complicated scene with a lot to take in. But the biggest problem for me is that you have quite a bit of out of focus foreground which just adds to the overall confusion.

I suspect that if you had focused on the tables, preferably with someone sitting there you would have a stronger image, even if that meant the background was slightly blurred.

Alternatively shoot/crop tighter for a specific subject.

I would crop both #2 and #3 tighter at the bottom to reduce the amount of plain area. The third in particular has the potential to become an excellent image.

As an alternative approach for #3 I'd just get shot of the light in the building as it feel it is distracting, but then I'd leave it at that.

Thank everyone for your comments.

In #1, the name was blocked off by a pillar which I have cropped out. I could perhaps have repositioned myself to me it in or taken two shots an done some photoshopping to get the name in the picture. It would have been a better picture if I had taken more time over it and used a tripod to get a better depth of field and possibly more detail but it was the overall pattern of colours that caught my attention.

Geoff, I should have cropped #2 more at the bottom. I am not sure about #1 because of the patch of red which I like even though it is very muted.

Definitely no.3 for me as well. I would like to loose that dark blob on the left hand edge though.
