    You've got to get that flash off camera, Victor. The lighting is very flat and uninteresting. Portraiture needs interesting shadow details on the face.

    You might also want to try to get the model to turn a bit and not shoot straight on.

    Victor... Try bouncing the flash straight up to the ceiling and using a white index card behind the flashtube to direct some of the flash towards the subject. This will open up the shadows beneath the eyebrows (raccoon eyes) and lighten the shadows below the chin.

    You can also fabricate a very useful diffuser - reflector out of white cardboard or foamboard:

    Victor,
    Is the flash iTTL on your D5100?
    With the limited knowledge I have of flash I would suggest bouncing flash from a reflective wall behind you. Yes, turn it’s neck around.
