    Single Barrel II

I reshot but it didn't come out quite like the first single barrel!

I had noticed some firearms postings so I thought I'd add one to the mix!

I'm just happy I didn't shoot myself in the dang foot!

    Single Barrel II

    I'll break it down...

I hung it from a boom arm against a black backdrop with some sail thread I had. Removed the thread in post. Lit it with three lights. One through a feathered horizontal strip box on the broadside (C-right) and behind to bring on the texture. One through another feathered strip box C-left and in in front to light the end of the barrel, front of the grip, front of the trigger guard, the trigger, and bring on the texture. The third was a hard rim light with grid and barn doors perpendicular to the backside of the semi-auto. That produced the highlights on the grip, trigger, trigger guard, and under the barrel but I may have needed it a bit higher to try for a highlight on the backside of the front and rear sights.

The pistol is black on a black BG (kind of a challenge in itself) so I converted it to mono. Added a hint of blue to the highlights and shadows trying for a "finished" look. Added a bit of "light" to the Glock logo on the grip among other things!

I now see that I may have lost a bit of the bottom of the magazine to the background. I can go back and dodge that in enough to solve that issue which I will do. But I'll post it anyway to illustrate my total incompetence!

This is definitely a low key image. Too much nuke and the pistol starts to take on a sliver look. Cool but unrealistic. So the problem is how to light/shoot the black subject against a black BG. I chose a low key solution with strategic highlighting to help define the shape. I am typically wrong so please feel free to tell me how it should be done!

Shot at 1/125, ISO 320, f/20, 120mm just to see if I could!

This works really well, Terry. Just one cautionary note: Don't drink the other single barrel while using this single barrel.

Thank you for that Mike! Be my luck I'd drop the bottle on one foot, shoot myself in the other, then as I was immobile couldn't reach the bottle to have a snort, or reach the gun to just go ahead and put myself out of my misery!

Excellent advice! (I hope its free!)

    Izzie,

Assuming both sides of the gun have equal photographic appeal, should it be pointing to the left or the right?

    Re: Single Barrel II

Mike...that is a silly question! I do not make it a habit pointing my gun to either left or right -- we here in Missouri have a good Castle Doctrine that allows us to point our guns where the person I want to shoot at is. Pretty much like a PIF sometimes...although I have yet to experience PIF.

When the life of me and mine are threatened, who cares about photographic appeal?

    Isabel,

Why is it important to place tall photographic subjects on the left but it's a silly question to ask which direction a gun should be pointed when it's a photographic subject?

    Terry,
You make it look so easy! What I mean is that the image is so well done the complexity of rendering it is not at all obvious to we mere mortals. Thanks for sharing what it took to produce a stunning image. Explanations provided by yourself and others are what make this site such a successful teaching/learning environment.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hey thank you everyone!

Christina, Andrew? I have gotten a lot from this Forum and hanging out with you guys. A lot.

I can't always offer anything useful because I'm just not that good or have the answer. I go through periods when I can't participate at all. But if there is ever anything I can ever do to return the huge favor this Forum has done me then that is exactly what I am going to do.

    Thank you for saying.

Terry... A BIG thank you to you for sharing all your beautiful work and the details behind the image, and for taking the time to always provided wonderfully constructive and helpful feedback in a most positive and delightful manner. Your feedback has helped me immensely and made a difference in my photography.... Hey, I even understand layers now, and use them regularly to sharpen things, ( not very complicated but a start). It took Geoff, Allan and Manfred several tries to explain the mystery of layers to me (Thank you also to Geoff, Allan and Manfred, which helped me a lot) and then you came along and tied it all together for me. And I know you make a huge difference to others too, just by reading your comments and feedback.
