Great photo David, really sharp. The detail when you zoom in on the fly is amazing. Was that a macro lens you were using

Just great - outstanding. First thought would be that this was a reaction, handheld, to a brief opportunity, but the precision here suggests something more planned and worked out before the trigger was pulled. Which?

    Re: Hoverfly

Front legs seem OK to me, David. If you look really closely you can see that she is 'washing her hands'.

Looks like Melanstoma scalare to me, although you do get a few extra species which we don't find this far north.

If you compare this image with a male you will notice a difference in the abdomen shape and colours.

Usually they appear over a long period from early Spring to late Autumn but I haven't seen any here yet this year. Just a few of the Eristalis tenax, and they were quite flighty.

ps. We previously had a Post Your Insects thread running for some time; where everyone was encouraged to post their images. Perhaps it is nearly time for another one to be started. Although getting to be the wrong time now for our southern continent members.

Thank you Mark, appreciated bud,the shot was not planned,i just go walkabout and hope to come across a shot,it was also hand held as is 99.9% of my shots, there is just not enough time to set up a tri-pod!

    Re: Hoverfly

Thanks Geoff, the leg must be bent or something (third leg on its right side, up from tail end)it still looks as if there's a bit missing to me

Cheers yet again for the detailed I.D. as all i knew was Hoverfly and like you say they are very flighty!
