Radio 4 - The Eye
There was a programme on BBC Radio4 yesterday hosted by Melvyn Bragg about the eye - trailer paragraph - " The eye has been the subject of research for at least 2500 years. Some ancient philosophers believed that the eye enabled creatures to see by emitting its own light. The function of the eye became an area of particular interest to doctors in the Islamic Golden Age. In Renaissance Europe the work of thinkers including Kepler and Descartes revolutionised thinking about how the organ worked, but it took several hundred years for the eye to be thoroughly understood."
Podcast is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/iot - don't know if this is available outside the UK - if not, let me know.

Re: Radio 4 - The Eye
I'll be sure to listen to it.
It's available outside the UK. I live in Spain and enjoy Melvyn Bragg's radio program; its topics are so wide and varied, covering philosophy, art, history, science, mathematics, culture.
BTW, I remember when I was young, before I learned science in school, when I too thought that the eye worked by emitting some kind of light, or something. I remember being surprised to learn that it simply let the light into my head!
