    Superb Blue Wren - Female

Some times you get lucky. I spotted this little one flitting amongst the scrubby undergrowth on the cliff edge overlooking the beach. They dart about so quickly, I was lucky to get a (reasonably) focused shot.

I'd say you did good! Those little buggers do flit about. Great position on the bird and your techs look good. Nice job.

Nice work, Greg! It is certainly hard to get a shot of this variety. Can I guess you used 1/800 or 1/1000 SS for this to be that sharp?

Excellent capture Greg. Tiny birds are really difficult and you nailed this very well.

Re: Superb Blue Wren - Female

Thank you to everyone for your very kind remarks.

Izzie, I took this shot with the EF-S55-250mm F4.5-5.6 IS II. It is the kit lens that came with the camera. I had the camera set on shutter priority, and the lens was at 1/500s, F5.6, 250mm ISO200. That is the shutter speed I have set when I am just walking about hoping for opportunity or inspiration.

I had just started out for the morning, and I was hanging over the safety railing contemplating the blue of the ocean when I heard several of these birds twitting in the undergrowth. I saw one land on this twig about 3-4 metres away, but it was gone before I could focus. However, I noticed it returned once or twice - or one of its mates did - so I focused on the twig and hoped one would come again. A split second later, one did and I held the shutter button down until the buffer filled up and by then it was gone. I got 6 frames and this was the best.

It was converted from RAW in ACR and had a tiny bit of USM applied with an inverted layer mask in PSCC. It is cropped at 60% zoom.

Perfect capture of a small bird in it's natural environment Greg. Love the way the colours all work together in this.
