Lost in the snow
Here is something different from my usual offerings.
Please comment. I am trying some different things on this snowy day.

Re: Lost in the snow
It is almost working for me; but I just wonder if it should be a little sharper, particularly the eyes.
Or alternatively, possibly more blurred?
Maybe at the moment, it is tending to appear more like a poor shot instead of a deliberate edit.
Great potential though.

Re: Lost in the snow
Thanks, Geoff.
I wondered the same thing myself. I can retake some shots while it is still snowing.

Re: Lost in the snow
Keep shooting while you can, with a variety of settings. There will always be time later for playing around with edits.
I have done a few high key images but not for some time; so I'm not really the best person for any complicated tips. At least not without finding and reading my notes from those shots.

Here is another shot. Not so heavy handed.

Re: Lost in the snow
FWIW, I'm inclined to think the first shot needs to be pushed a little more. The eyes are ok, but some of the greys seem too well defined to me. For example, the grey on the nose would be less prominent if it were blurred a little...

Re: Lost in the snow
Thank you, Greg. I did another level adjustment to help get rid of the harsher greys. What do you think of this?

Re: Lost in the snow
That looks a lot better to me, Marie. I think the hair has particularly benefitted from this adjustment, and there is still sufficient tonal detail in the face to define the nose and eye area.
I am no expert, though, and look forward to other people's opinion too.

Re: Lost in the snow
I seem to remember that the vital thing was careful selection of the areas to be retained as dark before over exposing the lighter areas.
Not sure what happened to my original training source but there were some handy tutorials by Mellisa Clifton about creating Line Art, Pop Art and Stencil effects, amongst other items.
I was never sufficiently artistic to get perfect results though.
Not sure if those tutorials are still available.

Changed slightly I think, but here is a link to the Melissa Clifton tutorials. See if there is anything useful for you there.

Re: Lost in the snow
I love this idea Marie and think that the framing of this shot, a high key presentation and the snowy scene is a great combination. I can't speak to the technicalities but am following along with interest

Re: Lost in the snow
Dear Shane,
Thank you. I do hope that others will comment as well.
As Geoff suggested, there were different treatments that could be applied to this image, depending on what I wished to accomplish. Interesting thought.
Best to you, Shane. I do love your images although I do not always comment.

Re: Lost in the snow
Marie, after looking at these again I prefer the shot with your eyes looking skyward (at the snow) and wonder about splitting the difference on the processing? I really like the presentation of your hair in the second image and the lack of detail in your face in the other version. That second part was hard to type as it felt like I was insulting you - I mean who wants lack of detail in their face unless of course there is a big blemish on it!

Re: Lost in the snow
Fun images Marie. Isn't it good to play. I find images like this to be subject to personal taste more than anything. I like the final version of the three the most.

Thank you, John.
I have Alienskin and there is a lot I can do to play with these images.
Stay tuned....
