I wanted to present an antiquated view of this rail yard, although it is still a function structure. Lighting was tricky because even though there are overhead lights, the interior of this structure is very dim, complicated for photography because the sides of the barn are open to outdoor light. The interior looks more dramatic when the interior is underexposed.

    f/1.7, 20mm, 1/60s, ISO 200.

    John,
While the colors in #2 are really vibrant, it (to me) gives the image a very upbeat feeling and looks fairly well in repair.
On the other hand, #1 brings out the lines and angles of the pipes and columns and much more strongly suggests being (or in the process of becoming) abandoned. And in that vein I really like #1 more.

John, I agree with Jack. The black and white gives the scene more of an aged feeling.

    Jack,

Thanks for the comments. I was undecided between maintaining the vivid color and thought the monochrome version would present both ideas.

    Greg,

Thanks for responding. I plan to return and try other variations.

Did you try to shoot at another angle or there is no room for another angle? I love the treatment you gave to #1. That is my favourite....good job, John.

I particularly like how the monochrome treatment has made the red overhead pipe work virtually disappear which tend to attract my attention in the colour version.
There is a lot to look at and explore in this image John.
    Really nice work mate.
    Cheers, Greg

Both nice images. However the Mono is my choice as it adds to the feeling of ageing chaos.

    Isabel,

There is only one doorway to shoot from without actually trespassing on the property. I could shoot at a lower angle though. Thanks for the comments.

Thanks again Greg. I do tend to get drawn back to this image and the actual location.

    thanks Christopher,

I am also undecided on which one I like best. The color version is more complex because I have to deal with multiple light sources, also time of day might make for a different look; I'll have to explore that as well.

    Binnur,

Thank you for your comments. One of very few images that I considered for monochrome treatment that was not because the color version didn't work well. With this image, both treatments (mono and color) have an almost equal footing presentation wise.

John - seems we are all agreed on the mono version - my only input would be that it may benefit to clone out that electricity supply which is dangling in front of the center column - it's a bit of a distraction.

    Steve,

Thanks for the comment and critique. I wonder if to someone who works in this field the scene would appear lacking something by removing.

Personally, I would have put more contrast on the first image. For a colour edit, muting the colours would work well with the lower contrast, then sharpening to bring out as much texture as possible would probably give you the feel that you're looking for.

    Great find, though.

Thanks Blake, there will be more renditions of this scene.

Beautifully photographed. I prefer the B&W and I think that is because in B&W I see more of the things in the image.
