Computers, butterflies and cacti. Or are they cactus's?

Finally got myself back online with a new computer so had to clear out my SD cards and then go and take some more photos.

The missus took me and our Son off to RHS Wisley to see the butterflies. If you are inclined i wrote a short blog about the day including a number of photos:

If you enjoy let me know, any comments, critique or observations are always welcome.

    Darren,

Nice blog entry and images. Sometimes the venue may not totally hold your interest, but as you had your family with you; their faces filled with fascination can more than make up for getting into the feel of the adventure.

Are you still using film or waiting for a replacement camera? Regarding Ubuntu, I was thinking about installing that on some old laptops which are running XP, how did you like the software?

Glad to see you back with us.

    Hi John

I have boxed up my faulty Pentax ME Super and it is now on ebay. Hopefully someone who knows hot to repair it will find good use of it. I will certainly buy another film camera, I will likely get another Pentax 35mm as I still ahve the 28mm, 50mm and 135mm lenses. It will probably be after the next payday at the earliest though. Would love to give medium format a go but at them moment I can't really invest in it.

I am a big fan of Ubuntu and have converted a number of other people. People who often think they need a new computer becuase their windows machine has slowed down after time. Like any new operating system it takes a bit of getting used to as things are different to windows but the day to day operation is similar. The key is having an open mind and being willing to learn new things.

My only caveats to using Ubuntu is that if you are into gaming then you probably want to keep Windows as the majoirty of mainstream games are windows only. If you are a big ipod user they can be difficult to play nicely, not impossible but difficult. And for us photographers who use Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop Ubuntu is no good as Adobe do not provide a linux version. There are plenty of native applications that may be sufficient.

My previous laptop was dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Windows 7 was only used to play Football Manager (which now is available for Ubuntu) and Adobe Lightroom. Everything else was done on Ubuntu.

Try it you might like it and I would be more than happy to help if you get stuck at any point.
