    Canon 70D from 60D.

Hi all, been a while since I posted. I am seriously planning to trade in my 60D and 70-200 f/4L USM lens for a 70D due to its fast AF and a few other features. Anyone with a 70D here who can share a few tips and images taken if possible?

All reviews so far are favourable towards the 70D ( but so were reviews concerning 60D ). I also like the fact the sensor works pretty well in lowlight and the fast focus amongst other things. DPreview indeed sums it up as being between a 7D and 6D. Hope this turns out to be a good decision.

    Trading for tradings sake!

I use D7000s (I also have a 60D), why don't I buy D7100s to replace my D7000s, because I see no reason. I earn my living with D7000s, will an upgrade make you a better photographer !

I also have a 60D and had looked at the 70D....some, but not enough new features to justify the upgrade for me. I'm waiting for the Canon 7D Mk II to see what it has to offer when it comes out this year. I'm thinking the 7D Mk II will be a much better upgrade in features important to me.

Sorry, Haseeb, but I agree with Carl on general principles. For me, if you're only upgrading a single tier or a single generation, it's typically not worth the cost. For me, the combined tier+generation count should be at least 2, and "makes sense" (for my budget and hobbyist use) around 3 or 4. Digital electronics depreciate rapidly, new ones come out every six months, and the product life of a camera body is typically only one to three years. Nearly any other piece of gear in the system will either cost you less or hang onto value longer--sometimes both. So, my upgrading the body, as a hobbyist, is typically only going to happen if my camera breaks down, or every other piece of camera gear I want costs as much or more.

The 60D didn't suddenly stop being capable of taking gorgeous shots just because the 70D was released. If you're going to chase every single release, it's an easy way to waste a lot of money/time that might be better spent on other things. There's also the fact that simply waiting a year will make the 70D a lot less expensive if you find one used.

The 70D, is a larger step up than most single-generation upgrades, however, as it reinstates some of the features (AFMA) that were removed in the 50D->60D move. If you're a video shooter, then it's definitely worth looking at. But if you want it for the fast-action capabilities, I also agree that a 7DMkII is likely to be even better in that regard, while incorporating the sensor/processor upgrades of the 70D and probably some from the 5DMkIII's AF system; the 7D has long been overdue for a refresh and is the oldest current model in the Canon lineup.

Gosh Kathy, I thought that you knew that any Canon camera abruptly ceases to work at midnight of the day that a later model is released Nikons still work until 6 am of the next day

Seriously, with the exception of video work, the 7D is still around because it is a pretty darn good camera. I strongly suspect that any upgrade will be principally along the lines of video capability.

It is astonishing that, presently, a refurbished 7D from Canon costs $400 - $500 (U.S. Dollars) more than several years ago when I purchased my two 7D cameras. So much for waiting until the price goes down...

Thank you for your replies, Jeremy, Carl, Kathy, Richard...its just that for some reason I find the results on the 60D not as sharp as my other camera 550D. Maybe its just me but that's one of the primary reasons I guess apart from the fact I hardly use the 70-200L as I have a 70 - 300 lens. Richard is right, I have been stalking the 7D and prices remain the same and in some shops, higher. However between the 7D and 70D, I thought the new sensor and articulated touch screen not to mention a lower price may be justifiable.

Haseeb... Are you shooting in RAW or in JPEG? The difference, if you are shooting JPEG, might have resulted from differences in sharpening applied in-camera to the JPEG images. Camera vs. camera and sensor vs. sensor; there should be no reason why the 60D images are not as sharp as the 550D...

Totally agree I have no problem with sharpness, most of my watersports shots are 60D

    Re: Canon 70D from 60D.

I take both, depending on what I shoot. Its quite possible the sharpness slider may be a bit more on the 550D ( I should check this out ). I use "Neutral" btw. Not sure but sometimes I feel the 60D is just not as sharp. I know the lenses I have are some of the best and I also know the 'diopter' is correctly adjusted for my right eye. I wear glasses for reading but not whilst shooting so perhaps this could be a reason? I hate shooting with glasses on.
