    A Simple Landscape for C&C

Yesterday my wife ran a 10K trail race at the DuPont Granogue Estate in northern Delaware. In an effort to live up to my New Year resolution to "shoot more people" I was there to photograph people running the trails. I did, in fact, take a ton of images of people.....but this is the one I submit to CIC!

Though I applaud the creativity involved in providing a unique perspective, displaying only the top of the buildings doesn't work for me.

I'll have to agree with Mike on this one; I'm not sure it really works all that well.

I'm reasonably happy with that shot, Andrew.

Possibly a slightly tighter crop to lose a fraction from the right side will move the building out of the main focus area. Then the main view looks onward to the far distance by way of the gap between the trees and building; instead of stopping at the building.

Probably able to lose a fraction from the foreground if necessary to create a suitable aspect ratio.

I like the winter tones a lot. I get the controversy about the barn - but you could look at it this way: this is much more interesting with it than it would be without it.

    Andrew,

You did a few things in this image that you can take home and keep it forever. The way you used the “rule of thirds” by placing the “barn” in the right bottom third. The way you used foreground, middle ground and background in the image. The way you filled the frame with the landscape and avoided the “blown out” sky. You saw the contrast between the roof and the snow. You saw the leading lines of the fence in the snow.

However, you captured an image on impulse. You did not think or visualize what you would like to say with the image. You did not look around you thinking of a better angle to capture the image.
You will look at this image and think for yourself, why did I not…………………..? You have learned something from this shot and when you have another opportunity you are going to plan the shot.

A tip from an old fool: When using a road as leading line whilst composing with the “rule of thirds” in mind. DO NOT STAND, kneel, lie down IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD! Shoot from the side you will have the leading line lead your eye into the image.
If only you could have taken the shot from the road crossing between you and the “barn”.

This is one of those shots I have captured hundreds of, hundreds of “if only I have done this or that”. Keep it and often look at it asking yourself : “How could I have improved on that shot?”

Keep what you have done correctly and improve on what you have done wrong.

Thanks for all for the comments. I think Andre has done a perfect job of putting this one in perspective for me.
